This baobab tree is only found on Madagascar where it is restricted to a few sites in the extreme north of the island. It is considered Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened species.

This species has large, white aromatic flowers that open at night to attract mammal pollinators. We have observed lemurs and fruit bats feeding on the nectar of this species and the gradual loss of these mammals may in time also present a threat to the baobab.
