This tree is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species because of declining habitat quality and poor regeneration. The fruit, seeds and bark of these trees play an important role in the local economy and culture but there is now a real need to ensure that traditional exploitatin methods are retained and that regegeration is encouraged in the most degraded parts of its range.

We began working on this species because it is pollinated by endemic fruit bats. The large white flowers open at night and the nectar attracts foraging fruit bats and in our study of nectarivory by endemic Malagasy fruit bats we suggest that the baobabs might be a vital source of food for the bats in the winter.
