Lake Tseny, located in the district of Port-Bergé, is home to a unique fish species found nowhere else in the world: the Damba Menarambo.

Thanks to local collaboration, one of its core values, Madagasikara Voakajy, together with members of the community, ensures regular monitoring of the lake.

A surveillance committee, called Vaomieran’ny rano, was formed with 16 members from the four VOI (Vondron'Olona Ifotony) or local communities around the lake. This committee carries out six patrols each month. To ensure optimal coverage of the lake, the patrollers are divided into three groups, each alternating their rounds and conducting two patrols per month.

The patrols focus on strict monitoring of the noyau dur (core zone), a protected area where no exploitation is allowed, and where most of the Damba Menarambo population resides. During patrols, the teams use the SMART tool, which records data on the lake's condition and tracks illegal activities. This system provides a clear view of the threats facing the lake and helps make informed decisions to strengthen conservation measures.

In addition to protecting the Damba Menarambo, this system helps define long-term conservation strategies for the endemic species of the lake.
