This was the central question addressed during the workshop organized on September 19, 2024, in Moramanga, in collaboration with local communities living around the protected area of Mangabe. Sixty people, originating from the four fokontany included in the PA, participated in this event.
The main objective of this workshop was to identify conservation priorities for the forest, taking into account the local realities and the challenges faced by communities due to the current degradation of this ecosystem. Participants were invited to reflect on the past, present, and future of the protected area in order to formulate concrete proposals. The expected outcome of this workshop is to define and implement long-term management strategies to preserve this precious forest.
According to data from Global Forest Watch, the Mangabe-Ranomafana-Sahasarotra forest lost nearly 2,550 hectares of forest cover in 2023 alone, due to illegal deforestation. This alarming rate of deforestation threatens not only the exceptional biodiversity of the region but also the livelihoods of local communities who depend directly on natural resources.
Faced with this critical situation, the discussions highlighted the urgency of adopting immediate measures. A precise and immediate decision regarding the management of migrants responsible for forest destruction is essential. The involvement of local authorities and communities is crucial to protect the resources of the protected area. Participants also emphasized the importance of strengthening patrols and further raising awareness among communities about sustainable conservation practices.
