October 25, 2024, marks another celebration of National Lemur Day, held under the theme "Lemurs, a National Treasure, a Global Pride". This day serves as a special occasion to remind us of the significance of these iconic animals of Madagascar and the essential role they play in our ecosystems.

Madagascar is home to over 110 species of lemurs, all of which are endemic to the island. This unique biodiversity cannot be found anywhere else in the world, making lemurs a national pride. However, these species are critically threatened, primarily due to the destruction of their natural habitats, illegal hunting, and wildlife trafficking. According to recent estimates, more than 90% of lemur species are currently at risk of extinction.

On this day, Madagasikara Voakajy reaffirms its commitment to protecting lemurs and their habitats. Since our founding, we have worked tirelessly to implement tangible conservation actions on the ground. We operate in several protected areas across Madagascar, such as the Mangabe Protected Area, where we sustainably manage forests that are home to ten lemur species. We actively engage local communities in conservation efforts, raising awareness about the importance of lemurs for biodiversity and promoting sustainable economic alternatives.

Lemurs are not only a biodiversity treasure for Madagascar but a world heritage. Their survival depends on collective action. We urge the public, decision-makers, and local stakeholders to get involved by:

  • Preserving forests, the primary refuge for lemurs.
  • Stopping illegal hunting and the trade of lemurs.
  • Supporting local conservation initiatives.
